Miles That Matter 2022 - 5K

Rissa's Heart

We created the Rissa’s Heart Team for the Phoenix Children's Hospital “Miles That Matter” 5K and Kids Dash to help help patients at PCH and would love your support. WALK. RUN. RIDE. ROW. FUNDRAISE. Families across Arizona need and depend on Phoenix Children’s and we want to help.

On a personal note, Rissa was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). HLHS basically means her left ventricle (the main blood pump for our bodies) was too underdeveloped to be viable, and she would require a series of open-heart surgeries to rewire her heart in order to have a chance at surviving. Her first open-heart surgery was when she was around 1 week old, her second at 5 months, and then another when she was 3. The surgery at 3 was a failure, so Rissa was added to the organ transplant list.

After 5 months on the waiting list, a matching donor heart became available. The call from her transplant team was received as she was opening presents during her birthday party, and the transplant was completed the next day- on her actual 4th birthday. She is now 2.5 years post-transplant and excelling, by all counts. Recent highlights are kindergarten graduation, getting involved in gymnastics, and learning to read.

We truly appreciate you helping support PCH and Rissa by joining her team, participating in the 5K in-person or virtually, and helping us fund-raise! We look forward to receiving messages and seeing posts of your 5K training, as well as the actual event. Use the hashtag #rissasheart for any of your 5K and fund-raising related posts.

Thanks again!
